The Legal team is responsible for providing in-house legal advice and assistance to the Commissioner and across the organisation, in particular, Operations and the Executive.

About the Role:

This is a contract role to cover parental leave until end of June 2022. 

Putting the spotlight on potentially corrupt behaviour can reveal sensitive information, information you will be trusted to work with confidentially and respectfully. It's not the kind of job you can go home and tell your friends or family about but the work is interesting, stimulating and incredibly rewarding.

The role of Principal Lawyers is to maintain a complex caseload providing the most senior technical advice across all litigation involving the Commissioner and/or Commission, including that related to prosecutions, subpoenas, civil claims and security applications.

Principal Lawyers provide mentoring to junior staff and support Team Leaders in their roles, and in their absence Principal Lawyers may be required to act as Team Leaders.

Principal Lawyers are required to provide authoritative and technical legal expertise relative to the role and functions of the IBAC, particularly in relation to criminal law and procedure, the law of evidence, coercive powers and other specialist tools. Principal Lawyers must also have strong familiarity with the conduct and methodology for investigations and assessment of evidence.

The role requires:

  • Significant legal experience in investigations or investigative strategy and assessment of evidence
  • Demonstrated experience in understanding and applying legislation and policy relevant to assessment and review processes or investigations in a dynamic team environment
  • Detailed understanding of the relevant legislative and integrity framework within Victoria
  • Extensive experience in an investigative or litigious or government law environment
  • Significant experience in drafting and supervising complex legal advice, correspondence, policy and
  • An ability to provide authoritative advice on a range of complex legal issues
  • Leadership, guidance and mentoring to less experienced team members as required
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and superior communication skills

The incumbent requires:

  • Bachelor of Laws or equivalent legal qualification from a recognised tertiary institution
  • Current practising certificate under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (or eligibility to acquire a practising certificate)
  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer (or eligibility to gain admission)
